Ranveli Island Resort

Best Experience: Couples, House Reef Snorkeling, Swimming with Whale Shark

Ranveli Island Resort in South Ari Atoll offers a super-casual, no-nonsense holiday in the Maldives with a hint of local vibration. With a series of various failures, Ranveli Village was in a quandary. The once thriving Italian club is struggling today to return to its former glory and good looks.

In 2107 Ranveli Island Resort has been acquired by Asia Prestige Management. The Hong Kong based management company secured the deal in December 2017 and plans to rebrand the resort as Zazz Island Resort. The acquisition is in line with the company’s expansion plans in Asia.

The good news is that today another resort is open to all nationalities (the largest variety of nationalities among any resort) and at a very good price. New, better events and positive local management regularly regained the reputation of Ranveli Village.

All 56 rooms are simple, but comfortable (albeit buggy), have their own stretch of sand or balconies with views, equipped with a mini-bar, vanity and writing desk. Since there are not enough televisions and the Internet in the rooms, those who do not really want to disconnect can find Ranveli as an analogue of pure escapism, which is difficult to manage, although others will argue that the spa, board games, TV salon, a huge beach, house reef snorkeling, swimming, diving, water sports, and weekly activities are good enough.

Ranveli Island Resort

The Island

Ranveli Island Resort is like a place that you will either love or hate, depending on what you need. With the same Maldivian managers, already 15 years old (although you will not find many local workers here), this small island seems to want to simultaneously fight for independence from tourists and do everything to make guests feel at home. There is a gap here; half of the island is for foreign tourists, while the other half is reserved for locals, staff and other non-tourist personalities. Public spaces are also a mixture of modern and outdated with such a relaxed attitude, against which no one - neither staff nor guests - seems to mind. The island’s most modern area is the spa, while some of the rooms, the bar, restaurant, and the large TV lounge hut all seem particularly worn. This island is definitely a spot for guests with low comfort requirements who are more interested in escaping from the natural beauty of the island than the presence of the sparkling benefits of civilization. While the lack of televisions or Wi-Fi can be annoying for some, others can be bitten by insects from head to toe and still pour positive reviews to this hotel. DOWNLOAD RESORT MAP

Ranveli Island Resort

The resort's layout is very convenient. 2 rows of 2-floor rooms are located in the middle of a thin island. At one end is the service area; on another tongue of sand. The interior of the island is beautifully dressed in flowers, arches of palm trees and lush green shrubs. Everyone enters their rooms from here, and the glass sliding doors open to the other side, which for the lucky few is the beach, but for many other guests only the space in front of the water’s edge is enough for a deck chair or supporting wall.

The biggest reminder of the past is the jetty with a pavilion in the style of the 19th century, which stretched over the water. Its spacious rooms and corridors are decorated with painted glass panels, carved pastel colors, arched transoms and leaded chandeliers.

Where once the ancestors of drinks, music and dance filled the building, turning after dinner into cabarea every night, out of season, this place is now only echoes of the old seaside pavilion. But this is the Maldives, and he may have already found a new life and purpose.

Ranveli Island Resort

Location

Located in South Ari Atoll (Dhangethi) on the tiny island of Villingilivaru, Ranveli Island Resort is about 30 minutes by seaplane from Malé - if there are no additional stops along the way. The islands in this Atoll drift fairly close to each other, allowing guests sunbathing on the beach here, to easily explore the ocean horizon and enjoy the views of neighboring resorts. Ranveli has a good house reef, and the dive center also offers trips to other nearby snorkeling and diving sites, with more impressive marine life, including whale sharks, rays and turtles. The hotel does not provide a speedboat shuttle service unless it is an emergency.

The Beach

Unlike most other islands in the Maldives, Ranveli Beach does not form a full circle. In fact, the island's entire northern side without a beach, forcing most guests to sunbathe on the deck by the pool or look for a place under the sun among the wooden lounge chairs on the other side of the resort. Nevertheless, the sand on the beach is incredibly soft, beautiful, and white and bordered by clear turquoise waters. You can also look out to the neighboring islands in the atoll.

Ranveli Island Resort

Rooms

Despite the fact that Ranveli has only one category of 56 rooms, not all Superior Rooms offer equal arrangements of accommodation. The rooms themselves are in very good condition. Finished with ivory and tan flowers, high-quality fixtures and furniture, they look really stylish and like guests. Although the interior is quite simple, in the Caribbean bamboo style with rattan furniture, dark orange walls, and bathrooms as in a motel - in the order of things, the situation on the first floor is much more scarce than on the second. Perhaps this is because of the simple white tile on the floor, against warm, artificial wood floors covering the higher levels. However, grabbing the "crane in the sky" on the top floor, you lose the "bird", and with it a small private courtyard and direct access to the beach. However, some guests prefer rooms on the upper floors due to the extra privacy and views, but most people are more mundane, probably too many rooms for this size island.

Ranveli Island Resort

All rooms have empty wardrobes; mini-bar with water, soft drinks and alcohol; toilet table; sets of chairs; open spaces; the main range of common toiletries and a deep bath. For lovers of hot water, although the pressure is decent, you can hardly find high (at best) temperatures here. Cut off from the world by the lack of Wi-Fi and TVs, guests can entertain themselves from time to time by killing winged insects, somehow wading into your temporary home.

Ranveli Island Resort

Food and Drink

There is only one restaurant in the hotel, Raankani, where a buffet meal is served for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and there is also a vegetarian menu. The chefs still cook Italian dishes and the staff manages a live pasta station twice a day. Near Bahdi Bar, complete with old and battered high stools with velvet crimson seats, a library, and a peek-a-boo with a floor facing the sea. Light snacks and tartlets can be ordered at the pool bar, which remains open for a long time after sunset. Also, at the western end of the island there is the aptly named Sunset Bar with a few built-in sofas and bar stools, and seating on the deck.

Ranveli Island Resort

Diving & Snorkeling

This area of the South Ari Atoll has many world-class dive sites, which is a big plus for avid divers, and for snorkeling there is a house reef that is located quite close to the beach, as well as at the neighboring Vilamendhoo and Lily Beach resorts. Snorkeling quality is very good, but the growth of coral is slow, perhaps due to the vertical wall and the prevailing fast currents.

Things to Do

For its small size, Ranveli still has most of the features that you would find in any other resort, although the Lansimoo Spa clearly stands out. Set in the island's interior with a large relaxing lounge, in a laid back atmosphere of flowing water, sauna, jacuzzi, indoor and outdoor treatment rooms, and a wooden bath, this spa is a modern and ideal place to getaway from smooth sands and endless sea views. The treatments cover everything from head to toe and can be done outdoors, in a gazebo with a thatched roof overlooking the ocean or in a separate room with candles and incense; each comes with a cup of tea. Although the beach area is superb, there is a medium size swimming pool with a smaller and smaller children's area attached in front of the hotel. This place has a view of the ocean, there is a slate-covered deck, and several curved wicker loungers with soft pillows on top.

Other resort facilities include a PADI certified dive center, which also offers snorkeling excursions, a small water sports center, board games (billiards and ping-pong), a shop open late but with breaks for prayers, an outdoor TV lounge, and a gym with a daily fee that saw better days. Unable to reach the rooms, free high-speed Wi-Fi is available at the pool bar.
