The Monsoon Season No One Told You About: Why We Traveled to the Maldives in Rainy Season (and Loved It)
Is June Really a Bad Time to Visit the Maldives? The Truth About Monsoon Season Travel
June, 2026
Let’s address the elephant in the lagoon.
When you tell people you’re going to the Maldives in June, you are usually met with a sharp inhale and a concerned, “Isn’t that the rainy season?”
Yes. Yes, it is. And we went anyway.
After months of saving and dreaming, my partner and I booked a 3-night stay at Hideaway Beach Resort & Spa in May/June 2026. We were anxious. We checked the weather app obsessively (don’t do it, it only shows clouds and rain icons). But we took a leap of faith—and it turned into one of the most magical, serene, and surprisingly luxurious trips we’ve ever taken.
Here is the honest, positive reality of traveling to the Maldives in shoulder season, why you shouldn’t fear the Maldives low season travel rush, and how a resort like Hideaway handles the "bad" weather so you don't have to.
The Anxiety is Real (But Misplaced)
We landed at Malé International Airport during a torrential downpour. Our hearts sank. We were ushered into the Hideaway Lounge at the seaplane terminal (a miracle of a place with massage chairs, a PS5, and a stocked fridge), and as we waited for the clouds to part, we talked ourselves into a bad mood.
Then we took off.
As we flew north, the rain stopped. By the time we landed on Dhonakulhi island, the sun was breaking through. Here is the truth about the Maldives in June: It doesn't rain all day. It rains hard for 20 minutes, the sky does a dramatic theater show, and then the turquoise water comes back bluer than ever.
The "Low Season" Trade-Off: Fewer Crowds, More Privacy
Because everyone is afraid of the Maldives monsoon season, the island was blissfully quiet. Occupancy was reportedly around 40-50%, but it felt like we had the place to ourselves.
-
The Privacy Factor: At Hideaway, the villas are already spaced out like private compounds. During low season, it felt like our own deserted island.
-
The Service: With fewer guests, the staff had time to breathe—and so did we. Our butler, Nin, wasn't rushing. The buggy drivers (never more than a 10-minute wait) stopped to chat about local birds.
The Verdict: We didn't just "save money" by traveling in the wet season; we bought exclusivity.
The Marine Life Reality Check (It’s Still Incredible)
Here is the biggest fear: Does the rain ruin the snorkeling?
No. But visibility is a variable.
We booked a guided turtle snorkeling tour via Dhoni. The skies were grey, and halfway through the session, the rain started. But here is the quote from a fellow guest (and our exact experience):
"It was monsoon season, so visibility was low and it started raining towards the end, but we spotted 2 sea turtles!"
And let me tell you—those two sea turtles erased every drop of rain. Hideaway boasts one of the closest and best house reefs in the Maldives. The reef is literally yards from the shore. We saw blacktip reef sharks swimming at our feet, eagle rays gliding by, and an explosion of colorful fish.
The resort provides complimentary snorkeling gear during your water villa stay. Low visibility doesn't mean no visibility. It means the scene looks like a moody BBC documentary rather than a bright Pixar film. It’s still breathtaking.
How Hideaway "Handles" the Weather (Seamlessly)
A 5-star resort in the Maldives low season needs to be ready for anything. Hideaway is. We experienced a sudden squall on our second day. The resort's infrastructure is designed to make the weather a non-issue.
-
The Villa: Our overwater villa had a sheltered outdoor patio with a daybed. We ordered room service, turned on the in-room entertainment, and watched the storm roll over the ocean from our dry, cozy infinity pool. The pool water is regulated to a neutral temperature—it was heaven.
-
The Food: The restaurants don't skip a beat. We had a beach dinner scheduled for our anniversary; rain forced a reschedule. The staff didn't blink. They moved us to a cozy table at Matheefaru (the main buffet) where the food (especially the Indian night) was so good we forgot about the sand.
-
The Activities: When the sun is out, you play golf, tennis, or padel. When it rains, you head to the spa (the Balinese massages are world-class) or the sports complex for billiards or the golf simulator.
The Cost Benefit: Affordable Luxury
We cannot ignore the elephant in the room: money. Affordable Maldives rainy season is not an oxymoron.
Traveling in Maldives in June versus December can save you 30-50% on the villa rate. That savings allowed us to upgrade to the White Platinum All-Inclusive plan. We drank Champagne at sunset (between the rain showers), ate lobster at Samsara, and never worried about a bill.
The Verdict: Would We Do It Again?
"We feel like we've only scratched the surface since we came during monsoon season... the reef leaves so much more to explore, and we owe this place a fairer-weather visit."
That was us on the last day.
But here is the twist: We fell in love with the drama of the wet season. The sunrises are explosive. The sunsets are moody. The air smells like wet earth and flowers.
If you wait for "perfect weather" (which, by the way, a honeymoon guest in April reported was "perfect"), you pay peak prices and fight for lounge chairs.
Final Tips for Your Shoulder Season Trip
-
Embrace the Schedule: It usually rains in the late afternoon or overnight. Snorkel in the morning (7 AM is magical for fish activity) and save spa treatments for the afternoon showers.
-
Trust the Butler: Let your butler (shout out to Aby and Nin!) manage the logistics. If an excursion gets rained out, they will find you something else to do instantly.
-
Don't Fear the Clouds: The lack of harsh sun makes walking the 1.4km length of this massive, green island pleasant rather than sweaty.
The Monsoon Season No One Told You About is actually "Secret Season." It’s quieter, cheaper, and just as wild. Go to Hideaway Beach Resort, pack a rain jacket, and get ready to fall in love with the chaos.
