Our culinary journey then took us to Madivaru, a restaurant that has undergone a complete renaissance. Once overlooked, it is now a cool, relaxed haven for those seeking a slightly less formal but equally delicious experience. The vibe here is "silky," as one guest described it—a sort of laid-back luxury.

While Raalhu is the star, Madivaru holds its own with a fusion menu that surprises and delights. The standout, without a doubt, is the Teppanyaki experience with Chef Francis. This is more than a meal; it’s a gastronomic show. Chef Francis is a character, a true entertainer who flips his spatulas, tells jokes, and creates a spectacle while cooking up some of the freshest seafood and steak you’ve ever tasted. It’s pricey but, as one reviewer noted, “deeeeeelicious!” The energy is infectious, and it’s the kind of evening that turns into a memory.

Beyond the Teppanyaki, the à la carte menu offers unique fusions. One guest recommended the oysters and the pistachio ice cream with Indian spices—a combination we tried and were blown away by. Madivaru is where you go when you want to let your hair down and let your taste buds explore.

No culinary tour of Veligandu is complete without immersing yourself in the vibrant, ever-changing world of the main restaurant, Dhonveli. This is the heart of the island’s dining, and it has been elevated to an art form. The days of a standard buffet are long gone.

Dhonveli is a theme park for food lovers. Each night is a different theme—from a lavish Street Food Market to a spectacular Christmas Eve Gala buffet. The effort the resort puts into these events is "truly amazing," as one guest put it. The level of detail is staggering.

The live stations are the main event. You can watch chefs expertly grill fresh fish and squid every day (though a few guests noted they’d love to see a meat grill station too). For breakfast, the live omelette station is a highlight, with chefs like Suresh and Nalintha earning special mentions for their skill and smiles. You can even make your own fresh juice using a top-of-the-line juicer.

One of our favorite moments was at breakfast, watching a chef at the "very end of the hall" who, according to another guest, "always has beautiful and delicious dishes." The variety ensures that no matter your dietary needs, you are spoiled for choice. The cheeses, a point of pride for the resort, are excellent, though a few connoisseurs noted the Brie and Camembert might have been from a different supplier than years past. For us, it was all part of the delicious adventure.

Beyond the Plate: The Full Experience

The culinary journey is woven into the fabric of Veligandu. You can enjoy a cocktail at the Thundi Bar, where bartenders like Awi, Adam, and Fathih are known for their exceptional service and cocktail knowledge. You can book a private beach dinner, where the setting sun and the sound of the waves provide the perfect backdrop for a meal.

The service, from our host Dilara to the gardeners like Sunil who greet you with a smile every morning, is what truly sets this place apart. The dedication of the staff, like the dive center team who even lent a guest their own flippers, creates a sense of family.

Yes, the island has changed. The paths are wider, and golf carts now traverse them, a concession to progress that a few of us traditionalists lament. But the spirit of Veligandu—the tranquility, the smiles, and above all, the incredible, unforgettable food—remains. It’s a place where you can walk barefoot from a fine-dining masterpiece to a themed buffet extravaganza, all in one day. For us, it’s still the benchmark. We’ll definitely be back.
