SAii Lagoon Maldives: The Honest 2026 Review Travelers Need
A balanced look at the praise and the pain points at SAii Lagoon Maldives
August, 2026
Let's be real: no resort is perfect. Not even in the Maldives.
SAii Lagoon Maldives, Curio Collection by Hilton, has been racking up glowing reviews throughout 2025 and 2026. Guests rave about the stunning overwater villas, the incredible dining variety across three interconnected islands, and the warm, attentive staff who go above and beyond. But if you dig into the honest feedback—the kind that doesn't just sing praises—you'll find a handful of recurring complaints that future guests deserve to know about.
Here's the unvarnished truth about what real reviewers are saying, warts and all.
The Storage Situation: Where Do I Put My Clothes?
One of the most consistent complaints across 2025–2026 reviews is the lack of closet space—particularly in the Sky Rooms.
"There is virtually no closet space for your clothes and the space they do have is filled with random 'art' stuff." — TripAdvisor review, January 2026
For a room that can cost upwards of $850 per night, guests expect more than a decorative shelf. The Sky Rooms (44 m²) are described as "basic and cramped", with limited storage forcing some visitors to live out of suitcases or pile clothes on the sofa.
The bottom line: If you're planning a longer stay or travelling with family, the limited storage might test your patience. Pack light, use the sofa creatively, or consider upgrading to a Beach Villa with more generous space.
Buggy Blues: The 20-Minute Wait
The SAii app is widely praised for making restaurant bookings and buggy requests effortless. But the reality of the buggy service doesn't always match the app's efficiency.
Multiple reviews mention wait times of 20 minutes or more for a buggy pickup. One guest noted that upon arrival, after a long flight, it took "at least a further 20 minutes for one to come to reception to pick us up". Another reviewer mentioned that buggies are on a first-come-first-serve basis with no set booking system, requiring guests to "keep calling until one is available".
The Phone Problem
A more concerning issue: some guests have reported buggy drivers looking at their phones while driving. One family with a pram noted that drivers "often seem to travel quite fast" and that it "occasionally felt a little unsafe, particularly when some drivers appeared to be looking at their phones". For families with young children, this is a legitimate safety concern.
The bottom line: The buggy service is generally efficient, but peak times can test your patience. The phone usage is a genuine safety issue that management should address.
Mosquitoes and the Morning Fumigation Smell
It's the Maldives—mosquitoes are part of the package. But SAii Lagoon's approach to pest control has drawn mixed reactions.
The resort sprays for mosquitoes twice daily and provides plug-in repellents and candles in rooms. Most guests report only a few bites during their stay. However, some visitors have been less fortunate:
"The only spoiler were bug bites. We stayed at another resort for a few days and never got any bites but when we came here unfortunately, we woke up and had mosquito bites." — Verified review
The early morning fumigation has also drawn complaints. One reviewer described being woken at 6:00 AM by what they first thought was a fire, only to realise it was the fumigation—and they "almost suffocated" from the smell. Another guest advised: "apply mosquito repellent before heading out, as the mosquitoes can be quite naughty!"
The bottom line: The resort takes mosquito control seriously, but the fumigation schedule and smell can be disruptive. Pack good repellent and expect some bites—this is the tropics, after all.
Sky Room Surprises: No Coffee Machine?!
Here's one that genuinely surprised us: Sky Rooms don't come with coffee machines.
"There is no coffee machine for such an expensive room—you have to ask for it, and you MAY get it based on availability." — TripAdvisor review, January 2026
For a room costing hundreds of dollars a night, instant coffee or having to request a machine feels like a miss. One reviewer was blunt: "Instant coffee in the rooms! Hilton! Are you serious? It's 2025!"
The bottom line: If you're a coffee lover, request a machine at check-in. But don't count on it being guaranteed.
Bike Rental Fees: A $10/Day Head-Scratcher
After spending thousands on your stay, being charged $10 per day for a basic bicycle feels like a nickle-and-dime move—and reviewers agree.
"After most guests spend literally thousands of dollars for their stay, they still charge you $10/day for the bike, which is super basic." — TripAdvisor review, January 2026
To add insult to injury, the bikes at Hard Rock Hotel (the sister property connected by a bridge) are free. Some guests have also noted that bikes have a waitlist and there's no proper booking system.
The bottom line: If you want to cycle around the island (and it's a lovely way to explore), budget for the $10/day fee—or take the free buggies instead.
But Here's the Thing...
For all these critiques, SAii Lagoon remains a wildly popular resort—and for good reason.
The staff are exceptional. Time and again, reviewers single out team members like Shella, Ramesh, Naeem, Ranga, Sanket, and many others for their warmth and professionalism. One guest summed it up: "The staff really do make this hotel extra special."
The location is unbeatable. Just a 15–20 minute speedboat from Male airport, it's one of the most accessible Maldives resorts. No seaplanes, no seasickness—just a quick ride to paradise.
The dining is phenomenal. With access to restaurants across SAii Lagoon, Hard Rock Hotel, and the Crossroads Marina, guests enjoy incredible variety. "The food was outstanding. Every restaurant we tried was 5-star worthy."
The beaches are perfection. Powdery white sand, crystal-clear water, and plenty of sunbeds.
