From the glass floor that turns into a nighttime aquarium to the huge pool and daily turtle sightings right off the deck, I'll cover what's great, what's not, and exactly which room numbers deliver the best privacy. If you're deciding between villa categories at Veligandu, this short review has everything you need.

Sunset Ocean Pool Villa at Veligandu Maldives with private pool and ocean view – Room 222

First Impressions: Arriving at Paradise

After hours of research and dozens of resort comparisons, my husband and I finally landed on Veligandu Maldives Resort Island for our 9-year anniversary. The seaplane transfer from Malé took just 20 minutes – a breathtaking ride over turquoise atolls that felt like a dream. When we touched down, staff greeted us with traditional drums and cold towels. Then we met our lifestyle host, Zaha, who whisked us to our Sunset Overwater Villa with a Private Pool (Room 222 – highly recommend this location).

From the moment we walked in, we said the same thing: "This is the one."

Full Room Tour: Sunset Ocean Pool Villa 222

Let me walk you through every detail, because the photos online don’t fully capture how thoughtful this villa is.

The Entrance & Glass Floor Window

You walk in and immediately notice the glass opening in the floor with views of the ocean floor below. At night, we turned on the underwater light and watched reef sharks, stingrays, and colorful fish swim right beneath us. It never got old.

The Bedroom & Smart Design

  • King-sized bed – oversized, incredibly comfortable with premium linens

  • His-and-her closets – separate spaces, plus a vanity area

  • Rainfall shower – perfect pressure, plus a second outdoor shower near the pool

  • Double sinks – ample counter space

  • Bathtub overlooking the ocean – we filled it twice just to watch the sunset from the tub

  • Blackout curtains & electric blinds – total privacy when you want it

  • JBL Bluetooth speaker & soundbar – connect your phone easily (though instructions would help)

The bed faces the ocean, so you wake up to an uninterrupted view of the Indian Ocean. No parking lots. No other villas in your sightline.

The HUGE Private Pool & Deck

This was the showstopper. The pool is far larger than most overwater villa pools we’ve seen – you can actually swim laps. The deck has:

  • Two sun loungers

  • A shaded daybed

  • Direct stairs into the lagoon (with handrails and lights for night swimming)

  • A hammock suspended over the water

The deck feels completely private. We spent hours here, just floating and watching eagle rays glide past.

Bathroom Amenities & Small Touches

  • Shampoo, conditioner, body gel, lotion – all in refillable glass bottles

  • Bathrobes and lounge robes (thick, high-quality)

  • Slippers and flip-flops – though we had to request slippers; our host sent them within an hour

  • Sewing kit, razor kit, disposable washcloths, cotton balls

  • Missing: comb, but not a big deal

Minibar & In-Room Tech

  • Stocked daily with wine (red/white/rosé/prosecco), beers, spirits, juices, sparkling water

  • Nespresso machine + tea kettle with variety of bags

  • Smart TV with Netflix and YouTube (perfect for hot afternoons)

  • Plenty of Euro and UK sockets – travel adapter provided

Sunset Views & Snorkeling Right from the Villa

The sunset side (west-facing) delivers exactly what it promises. Every evening around 6 PM, we sat on the deck with cocktails from Thundi Bar and watched the sky turn pink, orange, and purple. We even saw dolphins in the distance twice.

Snorkeling from the villa stairs was incredible. Within meters, we saw:

  • Blacktip reef sharks (harmless, curious)

  • Stingrays and eagle rays

  • Turtles (almost every day)

  • Octopus – we watched one change color for 20 minutes

  • Napoleon fish, triggerfish, parrotfish, and moray eels

The house reef is easily accessible. The best time is early morning after sunrise when the reef comes alive. One reviewer mentioned strong currents at certain tides – we found it manageable with fins, but weaker swimmers should use life jackets (available at the dive center).

Privacy & Noise: What to Expect

We stayed in Villa 222, which is near the end of the sunset overwater pontoon. Guests in villas 214–220 recommended by a March 2026 reviewer said those have the best privacy. Our villa felt secluded – no foot traffic passing by, and the soundproofing is excellent. With sliding doors closed, we heard nothing – not wind, not waves, not neighbors.

One thing to note: The new Sunset Ocean Pool Villas (post-renovation) have excellent insulation. Ceiling-mounted AC is silent, and compressors are outside the villa.

What We Loved (And a Few Small Criticisms)

Absolutely loved:

  • The glass floor – unique feature not found in most resorts

  • Pool size – genuinely huge for an overwater villa

  • Privacy – felt like our own world

  • Direct reef access – steps into thriving marine life

  • Sunset views – unforgettable every single night

Small improvements:

  • No slippers provided – but our host sent them immediately

  • No comb in toiletries – minor, but worth noting

  • Some deck boards had protruding nails – we reported it, and maintenance fixed it within hours

  • AC could be tricky – works best with doors completely closed

Villa Selection Advice (From Real Guest Experiences)

Based on multiple 2025-2026 reviews, here’s what past guests recommend:

Villa Range Best For Privacy Level
214–220 Maximum privacy, good water calmness High
200–205 Closer to island, calmer water but less privacy (visible from Raalhu Restaurant) Medium
222–225 End of pontoon, stunning views, slightly more wave action Very high

If you want the most private villa, aim for 214–220 or the very end (222–225). If you want calmest water for non-swimmers, choose villas closer to the island (200–205).

Is the Sunset Ocean Pool Villa Worth the Upgrade?

Absolutely yes. We compared the Ocean Jacuzzi Villas (older style) and the new Sunset Ocean Pool Villas. The latter are:

  • More modern (renovated late 2024)

  • Larger deck with bigger pool

  • Better soundproofing

  • Glass floor feature

  • Electric blinds and upgraded finishes

One reviewer who’s visited 13 Maldives islands said these new villas are "luxurious, private, and exactly what you want for a dream holiday." We agree.

Final Verdict: 10/10

We stayed 5 nights and could have stayed 5 more. The Sunset Ocean Pool Villa at Veligandu is everything you see in the photos – and more. The marine life, the service, the privacy, the sunset cocktails from your own deck… it’s the kind of experience you’ll talk about for years.

Would we stay again? We’ve already booked for 2027.

  • Best time to visit: November–April for calm seas (sunset side is calmer during north-east monsoon)

  • Book your villa early – Sunset Ocean Pool Villas sell out months in advance

  • Request specific villa numbers if you have privacy preferences

  • All-Inclusive Dine Around is worth it – includes unlimited drinks, minibar, and access to Raalhu & Madivaru restaurants

  • Pack sunscreen – it’s expensive on the island

  • Bring your own snorkel gear if you’re picky – though free rental is available
