A new landmark for glamor and sophistication in the Maldives, JOALI is an ultra luxury resort located on the island of Muravandhu, Raa atoll. Celebrating the "Joy of Life" with high skill, artistry and sustainability in its very essence, Joali promises a non-standard and exceptional island experience for its guests.
Opened in October 2018, Joali include 73 elegant private luxury beach and water villas and residences, where each room is inspired by individual stories and specially selected artifacts, thoughtful design and art elements. Four fine restaurants will serve the guests with an inventive fusion cuisine with unique recipes from around the world to satisfy the most demanding tastes. Expect a stylish whiskey lounge, a chocolate and ice cream shop, a curatorial library, a luxurious ESPA spa and a variety of water sports, including fitness and yoga. Joali will also engage in specialized guest experience aimed at educating and promoting deeper environmental awareness.
The Island
A holiday of pure relaxation and serenity, it could not get any better than this with the great personal touches from arrival to when you leave. The experience starts from the very beginning when a steward welcomes you at Malé airport. You will be taken care of the second you step out of the airport taken into the very plush Joali car to the private lounge. The relaxation and tranquility starts right here, the lounge is a cool welcome from the humidity, with refreshments and frivolities a plenty. Comfy chairs, nice music and cool drinks as you gaze out onto the seaplanes. It’s very slick. Joali lounge at the seaplane terminal will give you a nice taste of what’s coming next. The 50 min seaplane trip is a great chance to over look the islands and see a bit more of the Maldivian Islands from above. The seaplane journey is an experience itself, try to grab a seat next to a window and admire the view. After landing a speed boat is there to meet you along with a wonderfully friendly butler who was going to take care of you during our stay. The welcome jetty is so beautifully designed and modelled as a Manta ray. A real statement piece. As you step off the boat you are greeted with cold towels and a refreshing drink before being whisked off by buggy to your villa, luggage on route behind. Before leaving you to get settled in, a butler will give you a cell phone with her number programmed in for us to contact her/him whenever you wanted.
The resort is designed inside and outside of each tree to ensure the safety of the fine ecosystem of the tropical island and is located on Muravandhoo Island in Raa atoll, in the north of the Maldives archipelago in one of the largest and deepest atolls in the world. The word atoll means ‘ring-shaped coral reef’ enclosing a lagoon in Maldivian. The construction was designed to build around the trees to save as many as possible. 1000 trees were preserved, and they continue their lives with us. Muravandhoo boasts clear blue waters, untouched coral reefs and beautiful white sand beaches, a lush interior, and an abundance of coconut palms. Imagine the soft breeze making you feel alive, more than you had ever felt. Here, seemingly ordinary moments will transform you, for good. Hidden in the life between the palm trees; sand covered feet and shimmering water, it will all make sense to you. The joy of this island comes from within, it is in its nature and spreads. The sunsets are amazing and being castaway in luxury was just the best.
So much passion, care and thought has gone into the design. We’d describe the whole style as warm and welcoming. Soft edges, beautiful materials and a real sense of place. The overall feel is of a calm glamour, with a lovely palette of pinks, copper, pale blues and greens. The wood is carved on site and the thatched roofs are so pretty. It’s very soothing and has a great sense of tropical place.
Joali does not feel like a pretentious or stuffy resort whatsoever. It’s not a high heels kind of place, or somewhere you feel pressured to dress to impress. It’s just charming and elegant but in a simple, very refined way. Many guests prefer to go barefoot a lot around and that’s perfectly fine. It’s only a small resort, and you can cycle around it in 5 minutes. With 4 restaurants though and plenty to do, you’ll never get bored here!
Also if you want just take a walk around the island, there are lots of great art and sculptures dotted around that are interesting to see, and any of the staff will be able to tell you the meaning behind them. Again, this is another example of the passion on show here. The giant thatched manta rays are worth visiting too, a lovely spot to sit high up and also gives you the opportunity to take some beautiful selfies of the ocean.
The swimming pool overlooking the ocean is bliss, with two sides of beach and a lovely sandbank you can walk out on. The water is amazing, shaded and crystal clear. Snorkelling equipment is all provided complimentary.
This is definitely a resort focusing on eco credentials, and the team are actively engaged in minimising their footprint on land and sea, with lots of conservation projects ongoing and more planned. It's wonderful to see that.
What really makes this resort stand out from other similar level resorts is the team. Joali is under the impeccable management of GM Steven Philips, who was at Gili Lankanfushi before, which was regularly voted the best hotel in the world, and you can already see that Joali is going to be right up there with the best in the Maldives, if not THE best in years to come. Although the many guests would 100% return to Joali for it's sheer beauty, relaxed vibe and great food to be honest for us the main pull back is all the amazing team at Joali and the lovely butlers who will make you feel so welcome and helped to make Joali feel like home. This really makes the difference and justifies its exclusivity and cost.

The outlets each have their own touches each delivering a taste sensation with all the meals and the chef Ashley Goddard chat with the guests about their tastes and then would put together special menus to try and this is always something a little bit different but beautifully presented and delicious. The choice for diets like vegan and veggie and gluten free is all excellent, and never a problem for the chefs. Reviews
The first word that comes to describe Joali experience is WOW ! This is the new born resort which is clearly positioning itself in the supra luxury segment! And we can tell that they succeeded in this challenge. We hardly see what Joali could do better and we can highly recommend that place if you are looking for a truly exclusive experience in the Maldivian paradise. We think very quickly Joali is going to become one of the best resort in the Maldives. The island, villas, restaurants, staff, spa, everything is brand new and absolutely top notch yet there is a spirit to the island already. It's not a barefoot kind of place, but it's not pretentious or uptight. It's a place that values a relaxed kind of beauty that really speak to you. Joali is made for a truly unforgettable honeymoon.
