The Sea Cloud Spirit Is Christened and Ready for Service

The three-masted, full-rigged Sea Cloud Spirit has been officially named and christened at the cruise terminal in Palma de Mallorca, Spain. The 136-passenger windjammer's maiden voyage is scheduled from Rome on September 14, 2021.

"May you always carry a special spirit across the oceans, as your name promises," said Gabriela Toran, the wife of the ship’s designer Iñigo Echenique, as she christened the ship. Toran had assumed godmother duties after the originally planned godmother, Infanta Elena, of Spain had to cancel. 

The champagne bottle used for the christening was blessed on a pilgrimage of almost 74.5 miles. Spanish shipping lawyer and legal representative of Sea Cloud Cruises, Javier Arias-Camisón kept the promise he made at the beginning of the ship’s construction, to personally bring the champagne bottle for the christening on foot to Santiago de Compostela and have it blessed there.

In line with the Hamburg shipping company's concept, the new Sea Cloud Spirit, reflects a modern interpretation of the shipping company's 90-year-old flagship, Sea Cloud.

Conceptually, Sea Cloud Cruises believes the newly christened ship presents an alternative offering for cruisers in the premium segment who want to forgo large passenger ships but don't want to miss out on sea travel. For example, the 452.7-foot-long ship offers balcony accommodations, a wellness area and a fitness center.

Upcoming Itineraries
After initial voyages along the Italian coast between Tuscany and Sicily, Sea Cloud Spirit will cruise the waters around the Canary Islands between November 2021 and April 2022.

During winter season 2022-2023, the new ship will debut in the Caribbean and Central America, and will also offer voyages from Florida to the smaller Bahamian islands for the first time.

Operating since 1979, Sea Cloud Cruises now has three ships including the 90-year-old, four-masted barque Sea Cloud, her younger sister, the Sea Cloud II, and the new Sea Cloud Spirit.
