Snorkeling Kuredu Caves: A Favorite with a WOW factor!

With near-perfect conditions, the high-season months in the Maldives of February, March and April are a fantastic times for our guests to experience the true wonders the reefs around Kuredu offer. At this time of the year, the ocean is often as flat and smooth as a mirror and the visibility stretches far into the distance. Whilst all of the snorkelling sites around the Lhaviyani spoil our snorkellers with beautiful sights, there is one particular site that is always cited as a favourite with a wow factor: Kuredu Caves, a.k.a.’Turtle Airport’.

Kuredu Caves is an incredible snorkel site, especially when the sea goes flat and you can see all the way down into the abyss where the reef drops away, it provides some of the best snorkelling to be found anywhere. Advertised as one of our ‘big fish spots’ throughout the year, Caves is a good place to see turtles with the Maldives’ largest community of green sea turtles residing in the cave and overhang structure of the reef and feasting on meadows of seagrass in the lagoons. Sleepy sting rays and squadrons of eagle rays are frequently sighted here. Black tip reef sharks and lemon sharks patrol the shallow top reefs, and the clear waters allow snorkelers to witness grey reef and silver tip sharks as they cruise in the deeper waters. Bumphead parrot fish and napoleon wrasse take advantage of the multitude of cleaning stations located around the site, and giant trevallies enjoy balling the large colourful schools of fusiliers whilst barracuda and tuna lurk at the edges. Large schools of humpback and red snappers are dotted along the reef, whilst banner fish and red-tooth trigger fish seem to entirely coat the reef!

On the way to and from the dive site we are sometimes lucky with dolphin sightings so keep your cameras ready.
