Technical Diving in the Maldives

29 September, 2025

The Maldives has launched its first PADI TecRec Center, established by Aquaventure Dive Center in Addu City. This milestone marks a new era for technical diving, allowing explorers to experience the nation's spectacular underwater environments beyond recreational limits.

For serious divers, this means unprecedented access to the Maldives' most adventurous landscapes, from deep wrecks to uncharted reefs, all supported by top-tier training and equipment.

What is Technical Diving?

Technical diving, or "tec diving," is scuba diving’s extreme sport, taking experienced divers far deeper and longer than recreational limits allow. It is defined by diving beyond 40 meters/130 feet, requiring stage decompression, or using multiple gas mixtures in a single dive.

Because the surface is inaccessible in an emergency, tec diving uses extensive methodologies, technologies, and rigorous training to manage the added risks. It demands more effort, discipline, and equipment but rewards divers with the chance to visit untouched wrecks, deep reefs, and underwater realms few have ever seen.

Meet the Pioneer: Aquaventure Tec Dive Center

Aquaventure Dive Center, the organization behind this milestone, is not only the first PADI 5-Star TecRec Center in the Maldives but also the only TDI 5-Star Instructor Training Center in the country.

  • Expert Leadership: The center is led by Marc Kouwenberg, a seasoned professional with over 14,000 dives in oceans across the globe. He is a TDI DecoPro Instructor Trainer and PADI TEC50 Instructor, bringing a wealth of experience to the Maldives.

  • Top-Tier Equipment: The center is fully equipped with multiple compressors and quality rental gear from brands like Aqualung and Apeks. Their dive boat, a traditional "Dhoni," can reach most sites in under an hour, ensuring more time exploring and less time transiting.

  • A Mission of Safety and Fun: The primary objective of Aquaventure is to provide a safe, friendly, and fun environment where divers of all levels can learn and enjoy Addu's amazing marine life, without the crowds of mass tourism.

Courses Offered: From Aspiring to Advanced Tec Divers

The TecRec center is equipped to offer a wide range of technical diving courses, creating a seamless path from a curious recreational diver to a qualified technical diver. The PADI TecRec program is an integrated sequence of courses, each building upon the last.

PADI TecRec Course Pathway at Aquaventure

Course Depth Limit Duration Price (USD) Key Skills and Outcomes
TEC 40 40 meters / 130 feet Minimum 3 days $750 Transition from recreational to technical diving; use decompression gas up to 100% oxygen.
TEC 45 45 meters / 148 feet Minimum 3 days $750 Extend depth limit; manage two stage/decompression cylinders; build competency in skills and dive planning.
TEC 50 50 meters / 165 feet Minimum 4 days $1000 Develop full competence as a tec diver; make routine decompression dives to 50 meters.

For divers certified through other agencies, Aquaventure also offers equivalent TDI courses, such as Advanced NitroxDecompression Procedures, and Extended Range.

Prerequisites

While prerequisites vary by course, you will generally need to be an experienced diver with a PADI Advanced Open Water Diver certification (or equivalent) and a PADI Enriched Air Diver certification. A minimum number of logged dives is also required.

Why Addu Atoll is a Tec Diving Paradise

Addu Atoll, the southernmost atoll of the Maldives, offers a unique and pristine diving environment that is perfectly suited for technical diving adventures.

  • The British Loyalty Wreck: This 134-meter-long WWII shipwreck rests on its port side at a depth of around 33 meters. It is the largest wreck in the Maldives and an iconic, advanced dive site teeming with marine life.

  • Addu Manta Point: An excellent site where you can dive with manta rays, sharks, and turtles year-round. With an average depth of 30-35 meters, it's a paradise for all divers.

  • Addu Shark Point: As the name suggests, this site offers thrilling encounters with hundreds of sharks, including tiger sharks and silvertip sharks.

  • Villingili Coral Garden: Featuring some of the best hard coral reefs in the Maldives, this site offers stunning landscapes and easier diving conditions with fewer currents.

Practical Information and How to Book Your Tec Adventure

  • Getting There: Addu Atoll is about a 1-hour and 20-minute domestic flight from the main international airport in Malé. You can also fly directly to Gan International Airport in Addu from Colombo with SriLankan Airlines.

  • Accommodation: Aquaventure works closely with local guesthouses like "True South" and "Asseyri Guest House" to provide comfortable accommodation for divers.

  • Safety and Insurance: All divers in the Maldives are required to have valid dive insurance (such as from Divers Alert Network - DAN). Aquaventure plans dives using MultiDeco software and uses Shearwater dive computers to ensure safety and precision.
