Where to see: The Maldives gets rare Bioluminescence Plankton season!

On the Maldives beaches, locals on some of the islands and resorts have witnessed the rarest bioluminescence plankton also known as 'Redhan'. Pictures of planktons in these areas have gone viral on social media. It is known that most of the Bioluminescence Planktons are at the north of Maldives.

Bioluminescence seasons has already caught the world’s attention in 2017. Among them are photographs of Bioluminescence being erected on the beach of Vaadhoo in the north of Maldives. The Maldives and The Maldives’ Raa Atoll have become very popular among the tourists.

The World’s Leading Destination, the Maldives’ “Sea of Stars”, is on the tourist’s bucket list. In 2020 while the Maldives’ tourism sector is struggling to recover from the COVID Pandemic, the Visit Maldives page is also using Bioluminescence Planktons that have witnessed in the Hulhumale’ to promote the Maldives. As with most natural phenomenon, it is a huge challenge to put yourself in the right place at the right time. Blooms of bioluminescent plankton are notoriously difficult to predict, and they occur most often far out in the ocean.

Bioluminescence Plankton is a microorganism, also known as phytoplankton or dinoflagellates. Planktons are aquatic micro-organisms that are bioluminescent in nature and radiate a vibrant blue light under the sea, when agitated or moving. It looks exactly like ‘Sea of Stars’, and it’s a truly mesmerizing experience. Bioluminescence is a “cold light.” Cold light means less than 20% of the light generates thermal radiation, or heat.
