CROSSROADS Maldives Strengthens Commitment Towards Sustainable Tourism

CROSSROADS Maldives, the country’s first multi-island destination, has been striving for its sustainability initiatives since opening its door to the world. With the Memorandum of Understanding signed in December 2023, the destination has taken steps forward with dynamic approaches towards its beacon, “Building Big, Protecting Small”, to comply with its Corporate Social Responsibility goals.

CROSSROADS Maldives is dedicated to introducing global sustainable tourism schemes with several CSR activities, such as arranging educational tours for local schools and the experience. The sustainable development committee from CROSSROADS ensures field trips are organized on a monthly basis to as many schools as possible. Not only does this offer a chance for students to go on field trips but also to develop their interest in the tourism industry, which is one of the main pillars supporting Maldives’ economy. The in-depth tour allows students to visit different departments at the destination and a Q&A session to understand more about the operation behind a tourism destination. Besides arranging field trips to the destination, the team at CROSSROADS Maldives would also visit local schools to engage with the students and utilize funds to improve school facilities.

Apart from school visits, CROSSROADS Maldives organises Street Market at its retail area, The Marina@CROSSROADS. Every month, the destination welcomes different local enterprises, individuals, start-up businesses to showcase and promote their products to the local visitors and also hotel guests from different parts of the world. The destination serves as a resourceful platform for the SMEs to expand their business. To uplift the event, CROSSROADS invites local artists and performers to create a lively atmosphere for the Street Market. This monthly event has given impactful exposure to numerous enterprises.

As part of Green Globe Members, CROSSROADS Maldives also embeds sustainable practices from daily life to yearly plans in the operations of the two world-class resorts, Hard Rock Hotel Maldives and SAii Lagoon Maldives, Curio Collection by Hilton. With talented in-house marine biologists and its very own sustainability experts, CROSSROADS Maldives embeds sustainable practices covering 4 key areas – Sustainable Management, Social and Economic Development, Environmental Practices and Cultural Heritage.
