24 September, 2024
The third week of September 2024 in the Maldives saw locals and private island resorts join with millions of others across the globe for the annual Clean Up the World event, and the teams of Crown & Champa Resorts joined them.
Hurawalhi Team Joins Local School Students for Uninhabited Island Clean Up
Hurawalhi’s 2024 event started on 17th September with a special presentation by our Marine Biologist at the Team Village about the Waste and the importance of separating it them and that was followed on the 19th by the Marine Biologist giving a presentation about waste pollution and how it affects marine life. Later in the week the Hurawalhi team undertook local uninhabited island clean ups with the collaboration of Hinnavaru School students, teachers and scouts. Snorkelers took part in a snorkel clean up tour whilst divers cleaned up a reef underwater. The week’s events finished with a tree planting activity.
Annually, an estimated 2 billion tons of solid waste are created, about 400 million tonnes of which is being plastic and there is expected to be a 70% increase in the next 30 years. Clean Up events are vital to the health of our oceans where plastic debris poses a huge risk to marine creatures. Clean Up the World organisation was established in 1993 and is one of the largest community-based environmental programs in the world with an estimated 35 million volunteers across 133 countries, including: community groups, schools, businesses, and local governments; Prodivers is proud to support this annual event.
We collect debris as and when we see it during our dives, keeping our reefs and dive sites as clean as possible so being able to visit an uninhabited island which doesn’t usually benefit from such cleaning was a worthwhile cause, preventing any of that washed-up debris from entering the ocean.
A big ‘thank you’ to everyone who contributed to making the Lhaviyani Atoll and its surroundings even more spotless and beautiful!
Guests, Prodivers, and Resort, unite for Clean Up the World on Komandoo
Saturday 21st September 2024 saw millions of people around the world join together for the annual Clean Up the World event and the team on Komandoo joined them. This global event began in Australia three decades ago, when a team of volunteers removed rubbish from the Sydney Harbour area, and it’s been growing ever since to become the global environmental phenomenon it is today.
A team of guests and staff took part in the event on Komandoo, they snorkelled the lagoon areas to remove any debris washed in by the currents. It’s vital for the marine life that we continuously remove anything that doesn’t belong in the natural environment and at Komandoo every day is Clean-Up Day! When one thinks of what a tiny island like Komandoo has achieved, the positive impact on the environment of all the millions of people taking part across the globe is astounding.
A big thank you to the guests, resort staff and Prodivers team members who gave up their time for such a good cause – what an amazing team effort.
Clean Up the World 2024 with Kuredu
The plight of our oceans has been at the forefront of many news stories in recent times, especially in relation to the amount of plastic washed up on beaches and drifting in the water. In order to help increase the awareness of the problems that marine debris causes in our oceans, Prodivers helped to organise events where guests could join in with this worldwide cleanup operation.
Prodivers Kuredu gave a fascinating talk for guests on Thursday evening about trash and action that can be taken to combat it, this raised awareness ready for the big day. The team joined forces with guests and resort staff and cleaned up debris from around Kuredu’s lagoon and along the side of the jetty where supply boats dock. The beaches were cleaned as well as the dive site ‘Kuredu Out’. Together we collected bags of rubbish, consisting mainly of plastic bottles, fishing lines and small bits and pieces. Debris constantly drifts around the oceans with the currents and it’s thanks to the continuing dedication of our team that guests can enjoy a picture-postcard holiday experience every time they visit. Ending the day in unity, everyone celebrated this momentous day with refreshments provided by Kuredu Resort.
